Egypt Warns Against Irresponsible Israeli Threats To Use Nuclear Weapons In Gaza

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- Egypt has warned of the danger of the current stalemate in achieving nuclear disarmament and renewed threats to use nuclear weapons, including irresponsible Israeli statements regarding the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this came in a speech by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Dr. Badr Abdelatty during his participation in the high-level meeting to celebrate the International Day for the Full Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In November 2023, Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, told Israeli media that dropping a "nuclear bomb" on Gaza is "an option" and he renewed his call for bombing Gaza with a nuclear weapon in January 2024.
The statement added that the minister condemned the Israeli occupation's practices of systematic starvation and forced displacement against Palestinian people in a gross and unprecedented violation of the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.
He noted the importance of commemorating this important day to emphasize the threat that nuclear weapons pose to international peace and security, expressing Egypt's full support for the statements of the Non-Aligned Movement, the African Group, and the Arab Group calling for the elimination of this threat.
Abdelatty stressed Egypt's commitment to working towards universalizing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, particularly in the Middle East, as the only guarantee for protecting the peoples of the region from the dangers of the use of nuclear weapons.
He added that the 1995 Review Conference resolution on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East is an integral part of the indefinite extension of the treaty.
The minister stressed that the indefinite extension of the treaty does not mean that nuclear states will continue to retain their weapons, but rather that nuclear states have a moral and legal responsibility and an obligation under the treaty to disarm in a verifiable and irreversible manner.
He also expressed the importance of nuclear states taking practical steps towards achieving nuclear disarmament, which would create the climate for the success of the 11th session of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, 15 years after the last final document adopted by the review conferences, which would increase trust among members of the international community as well as confidence in the ability of multilateral action to maintain international security and peace.
The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed annually on September 26th.
This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to: raise public awareness about the threat posed by nuclear weapons and reaffirm the international community's commitment to achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world. (end)
