Amman, Sep. 25 (Petra) – Japan's Ambassador to Jordan, Hideki Asari, on Thursday visited Zaatari Refugee Camp, affirming his country's continued support for refugees and host communities.
During his meeting with refugees, the envoy underscored the importance of the partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) amid the increasing pressure on humanitarian funding.
Asari said Japan's support seeks to address the social and economic challenges facing refugees in camps and host communities by providing protection services and emergency cash assistance.
Asari affirmed Tokyo renews its commitment to supporting Jordan, which has "one of the highest per capita refugee-hosting countries, by identifying durable solutions that contribute to supporting refugees."
In a statement on Thursday, UNHCR said Japan's support to the agency contributes to enabling it to continue implementing community-based activities aimed at engaging refugees in designing solutions for their communities, mainly cultural and educational initiatives, child protection, women's empowerment, and the development of livelihood skills.
UNHCR added that Japanese funding contributes to providing cash assistance to refugees, including people with critical illnesses and mother-led families.
In turn, UNHCR Representative in Jordan, Maria Stavropoulou, noted Japan's support enables the UN agency to respond to urgent needs and create conditions that help refugees rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities.
