Xi takes part in Xinjiang’s seventieth founding anniversary

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping took part on Thursday in a large-scale celebration marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to state media.
Xi, who also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China, attended the event in Urumqi, the regional capital. He is the first Chinese president to participate in a founding anniversary celebration in Xinjiang.

At the gala, Xi joined local officials and members of the public “from all ethnic groups and all walks of life.” He arrived in Urumqi on Tuesday, leading a delegation that included Communist Party ideologue Wang Huning and his chief of staff, Cai Qi.

Xinjiang, established in October 1955, is one of China’s five autonomous regions and has a significant ethnic minority population. It is home to over 10 million Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim Turkic group.

The Uyghurs, who constitute roughly 45% of the region’s population, have long accused China of cultural, religious, and economic discrimination, allegations that Beijing denies.
