Daniel Skerritt

Daniel Skerritt is an affiliated researcher with the Fisheries Economics Research Unit at University British Columbia. He began his career in the Marine Ecosystems and Governance research group at Newcastle University, where his research focused on population dynamics and incorporating novel techniques such as acoustic telemetry in order to inform and improve management and conservation.

He subsequently worked as an international consultant, leading projects for numerous NGOs and public bodies, including contributing to the evaluation and reform of the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy on issues of international oceans governance, non-local labour, fisheries subsidies, and the beneficial ownership and exclusive rights of fisheries means of production.

His research now focuses on understanding the links between social, economic and ecological aspects of fisheries management and governance, the common thread being that it aims to directly respond to fisheries policy-issues. Currently, he is applying this multidisciplinary approach to help deliver the Transparent Oceans Initiative which aims to protect the ocean, improve the rule of law, and increase equity by revealing the activities-and consequences-of nations engaged in fishing on the high seas and the waters of other countries, so called distant-water fishing.
