Portugal Confirms Intention To Recognize Palestinian State
The announcement comes ahead of next week's United Nations General Assembly in New York. France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are preparing similar statements.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Portugal will recognize the State of Palestine... the official declaration of recognition will be made on Sunday, September 21,” the Ministry said in a statement, as reported by the Times of Israel.
Israel has sharply criticized the recognition plans, arguing that they reward the militant group Hamas for its October 7, 2023, attack, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.
As reported by Ukrinform, in late July, the office of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said Portugal would consider recognizing the State of Palestine at the United Nations in September.
