US, Taliban Discuss Possible Return Of American Troops To Bagram Airbase: WSJ

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The United States is reportedly in talks with the Taliban over redeploying limited troops to Bagram Airbase for counterterrorism operations, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The United States is holding talks with the Taliban over the possible return of a limited number of American troops to Bagram Airbase for counterterrorism operations, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, September 19.

According to the report, the negotiations are being led by Adam Boehler, Washington's special envoy for hostage affairs, and cover a range of issues, including prisoner exchanges and economic-security arrangements.

Citing a US official, the paper said Washington is considering establishing a restricted military presence at Bagram to support targeted counterterrorism activities.

Bagram Airbase was once the largest US military installation in Afghanistan before the fall of Kabul in 2021, serving as a hub for combat and logistical operations.

The Taliban, however, have repeatedly rejected the idea of foreign forces returning, calling any renewed military presence on Afghanistan soil“unacceptable” and a violation of sovereignty.

The outcome of these talks may influence Washington's broader counterterrorism posture in South Asia and test the Taliban's capacity to balance external pressure with internal control.
