Kuwait Calls For Nuclear Weapons-Free Mideast, Holding Israeli Occupation Responsible
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
VIENNA, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait called on Thursday for a Middle East region free of nuclear weapons, a step vital for regional and international peace and security.
Speaking to the 69th IAEA General Conference, third Secretary at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bandar Al-Fagaan stressed that collective security could be achieved by creating zones free of nuclear arsenals and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), indicating that this was a viable goal for the international community and would help build trust among countries.
He referred to international examples of successful ventures in this domain in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, saying that political will was essential.
The Kuwaiti diplomat criticized the Israeli occupation for being the only country not a part of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and stressed that its nuclear facilities must be inspected to achieve the goal of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons.
He called upon the international community to take responsibility and force the Israeli occupation to join global treaties and make its nuclear facilities available for inspection.
Al-Fagaan renewed Kuwait's commitment to all UN and IAEA resolutions and decisions, reiterating his country's keenness on global security and peace. (end)
