US House Votes Against Censuring Rep. Ilhan Omar

(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives on Wednesday night voted against censuring Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar for her statements regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to multiple media outlets.

The close 214-213 decision to refrain from punishing Omar occurred in the Republican-led House, aided by the support of four Republican members: Reps. Cory Mills of Florida, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California, and Mike Flood of Nebraska.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina had introduced the resolution aiming to censure Omar and remove her from the Education and Workforce and Budget committees.
Omar and Mace have clashed on social media over political commentary concerning Kirk’s passing.

The latest exchange intensified after Omar shared another user’s video last Friday, describing Kirk as a "reprehensible human being" and criticizing the Republican Party’s response to his death.

The video included the statement: "Don’t be fooled; these people don’t give a single s*** about Charlie Kirk; they are just using his death to further their Christo-fascist agenda."

In defending her vote against the censure, McClintock acknowledged that Omar’s remarks were "disgusting and hateful," but emphasized that they did not violate House rules and were safeguarded under the US Constitution’s First Amendment protections for free speech.
