Greek Vessels Join Global Sumud Fleet
(MENAFN) Ships from Greece departed Sunday from the harbor of Syros island to participate in the Global Sumud Fleet for Gaza, an extensive international convoy of civilian vessels seeking to challenge Israel's siege on the enclave and provide humanitarian relief.
The vessel Oksigono is staffed exclusively by a Greek crew, while the ship Ilektra carries volunteers from Greece along with participants from other nations.
Throughout the island, solidarity events were organized during the day, drawing hundreds of supporters who gathered at the port to uplift the spirits of the crews.
As the boats left the shore, the assembled crowd waved Palestinian banners and shouted chants such as “Freedom for Gaza,” “Resistance will win” and “Down with Israel.”
Representatives of March to Gaza Greece, a pro-Palestinian initiative coordinating solidarity actions in the country, stressed that the mission of the Greek ships is to assist in ending Israel’s blockade of Gaza, rally the international community, and contribute to creating a safe passage for humanitarian supplies into the territory.
It was further underlined that the flotilla delivers a powerful signal of global solidarity by drawing focus to the humanitarian disaster within the enclave.
The Global Sumud Fleet first began gathering last month, with vessels setting off from Barcelona, Spain, and Genoa, Italy.
