US, Iraq Coordinate on ISIS Detainee Transfers

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani spoke over the phone on Sunday to address the relocation of ISIS (Daesh) militants to secure facilities within Iraq.

"The Secretary commended the Government of Iraq’s initiative and leadership in expediting the transfer and detention of ISIS terrorists to secure facilities in Iraq, following recent instability in northeast Syria.

The Secretary and Prime Minister discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure countries rapidly repatriate their citizens in Iraq, bringing them to justice," a statement from the US State Department explained.

The announcement also highlighted that the leaders touched on Iraq’s “ongoing deliberations" to establish a new government, emphasizing a "shared commitment" to guarantee the nation can fulfill its potential "as a force for stability, prosperity, and security in the Middle East."

"The Secretary emphasized that a government controlled by Iran cannot successfully put Iraq’s own interests first, keep Iraq out of regional conflicts, or advance the mutually beneficial partnership between the United States and Iraq," the statement added.

Earlier this week, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it had initiated an operation to relocate ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq, aiming to ensure that members of the terror organization remain in secure detention.

The operation started with US forces moving 150 ISIS fighters from a detention center in northeastern Hasakah province to a safeguarded facility in Iraq, with plans for as many as 7,000 detainees to eventually be transferred to Iraqi-controlled locations.
