Iran Warns Against Activating Snapback Mechanism On Nuclear Program

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TEHRAN, Sept 14 (KUNA) -- Foreign Minister of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, warned on Sunday European countries against activating snapback mechanism reimposing sanctions.
On Social Media platform X, Araghchi stated that the European troika have "no legal, moral or political right" to activate the snapback mechanism.
The troika -- Britain, France and Germany -- had alerted the Security Council earlier with intent on reimposing the mechanism.
The mechanism is a diplomatic and legal process established under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.
As per the stipulations of the resolution, any party is allowed to refer the matter to the Security Council should Iran violate its commitments and sanctions could be reimposed swiftly.
While this is supposed to take effect on October 18, European countries announced their intent to activate the mechanism should a nuclear agreement not be reached prior to this date.
Iran signed the nuclear agreement back in 2015 with the five permanent members of the UNSC, as well as Germany.
In 2018, the United States withdrew from the agreement and began imposing economic sanctions on Iran. (end)
