Poland Seeks NATO Talks After Russian Drone Incident
(MENAFN) Poland intends to request NATO to activate Article 4 following the entry of Russian drones into its airspace, Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed lawmakers on Wednesday.
His comments came after a National Security Bureau (BBN) meeting organized by President Karol Nawrocki. Tusk noted that the decision was made jointly with the president.
Article 4 initiates consultations among NATO members whenever a country believes its security, territory, or political independence is at risk. It facilitates high-level discussions on addressing threats but does not obligate the alliance to take military action.
“Article 4 is just the beginning of deeper cooperation, and words are not enough. We will expect significantly greater support during the consultations. This is not our war, this is not just a war for Ukrainians, this is a war, a confrontation that Russia has declared on the entire free world,” Tusk stated.
NATO reports that Article 4 has been invoked only seven times since the alliance’s establishment in 1949.
Earlier on Wednesday, Tusk shared on social media that Poland’s military had intercepted drones that violated its airspace overnight.
He added that he had convened an emergency Cabinet meeting and briefed NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Following the downing of 19 drones, as reported by a news outlet, multiple airports, including Warsaw and Rzeszow, were temporarily closed as a safety measure.
Police, border guards, and firefighters were also placed on high alert throughout eastern Poland.
