U.S. Announces Termination of TPS for Honduras, Nicaragua Nationals

(MENAFN) The Trump administration's move to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Honduras and Nicaragua was officially set to take effect late Monday, putting an end to deportation protections and work permits for at least 76,000 immigrants.

The Federal Register released notices confirming that TPS designations for both countries will expire at 11:59 p.m. local time on September 8 (0359 GMT on Tuesday). Following this deadline, beneficiaries will lose both their protection from deportation and their authorization to work in the U.S.

Originally granted in 1999 in the wake of Hurricane Mitch's catastrophic impact in 1998, TPS allowed citizens of Honduras and Nicaragua to remain in the U.S. due to the ongoing effects of the disaster.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that both countries no longer meet the program's statutory criteria, citing that conditions in Honduras and Nicaragua have improved sufficiently to allow for the safe repatriation of their nationals.

Currently, approximately 72,000 Honduran nationals and 4,000 Nicaraguan nationals are beneficiaries of TPS.
