Hawaii on Alert as Hurricane Kiko Approaches
(MENAFN) Hawaii has issued a statewide emergency declaration ahead of Hurricane Kiko’s expected impact, as officials brace for dangerous weather conditions set to begin Monday.
Acting Governor Sylvia Luke signed the emergency proclamation Friday, enabling the Hawaii National Guard to assist local response teams, activating the state’s Major Disaster Fund, and suspending certain laws to streamline emergency actions, her office confirmed.
“To ensure the safety and preparedness of our communities, the state and counties will stand ready to mobilize resources to clear debris, secure infrastructure, and respond quickly to any possible damage caused by the storm,” Luke said. “We urge residents and visitors to monitor updates, follow official guidance and prepare accordingly.”
Meteorologists at the Honolulu Weather Service anticipate that Hurricane Kiko will move north of the Hawaiian Islands between late Tuesday and Wednesday. Although a direct hit is not expected, the storm is projected to bring strong winds, intense rainfall, and dangerous surf beginning Monday, according to the governor’s office.
The agency also cautioned that ocean swells will steadily build throughout Monday, with the most hazardous surf conditions likely to impact east-facing coastlines Monday night into Tuesday, posing a significant threat to public safety.
The emergency proclamation is effective immediately and remains in place through September 19 unless modified. Officials continue to urge residents to remain alert, follow official instructions, and ensure emergency kits are stocked.
