Trump supports ‘Chinese peacekeepers’ in Ukraine

(MENAFN) Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly proposed the idea of deploying Chinese peacekeepers to Ukraine to help oversee a potential ceasefire between Russian and Ukrainian forces, according to the Financial Times, which cited individuals familiar with the talks.

Four sources told the outlet that Trump suggested Chinese troops could monitor a demilitarized buffer zone along the 1,300-kilometer front line as part of a future peace agreement. The idea was allegedly brought up during a recent White House meeting that included European leaders and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

However, a senior official from Trump’s camp has dismissed the report, calling it “false” and claiming no such discussions have occurred.

The proposal has reportedly drawn skepticism from EU nations and has been previously rejected by Zelensky, who criticized China for failing to prevent earlier stages of the conflict in 2014 and 2022.

There have been ongoing discussions among U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials about establishing a neutral zone patrolled by international peacekeepers as part of a long-term peace strategy. While some have floated the idea of using Western troops, Russia strongly opposes any NATO military presence in Ukraine, citing it as a root cause of the war.

Though China has portrayed itself as a neutral party and consistently called for a political resolution, its Foreign Ministry recently denied claims that it is considering joining a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

Russia, while open to some form of Western security guarantees for Ukraine, insists that any agreement must involve all permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China. Moscow maintains that such guarantees should not be designed solely to limit Russia’s influence.
