Kuwait Hosts GCC Social Affairs Undersecretaries Meeting, Highlights Unity, Development

KUWAIT, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Acting Undersecretary of Social Affairs Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi reaffirmed on Tuesday that the 11th meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) social affairs undersecretaries reflects the unity and will prioritize citizens' welfare.
In his opening remarks, Al-Ajmi expressed pride in Kuwait hosting the event, emphasizing the significance of the meeting, saying it goes beyond reviewing agendas or drafting recommendations, but a reflection of the " human first" principle in action
He called for a stronger joint mechanisms, turning challenges into opportunities, and deeper cooperation.
Al-Ajmi reaffirmed Kuwait's firm commitment to supporting all joint Gulf efforts and providing the necessary resources to make these meetings a springboard for broader cooperation and stronger integration.
Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs at the General Secretariat of the GCC, Khaled Al-Sunaidi, echoed Al-Ajmi's remarks, emphasizing the importance of such meetings to the society.
He noted that the GCC population reached 61 million in 2024, with women accounting for 49 percent and the 15-64 age group making up 71 percent, requiring innovative programs to improve the quality of life.
He said that member states have advanced in social protection, insurance, women's empowerment, and care for people with disabilities and the elderly, with more than six million people benefited from social protection program in 2023, 12 percent increase from previous years.
Al-Sunaidi reiterated the 15 percent low-income household rate, economic shifts and the impact of global crises on vulnerable groups, urging greater coordination and hoping for practical outcomes that reinforce integration among GCC states.
He conveyed deep gratitude to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, current chairman of the GCC Supreme Council, and to Gulf leaders for their continued support of joint action.
He also thanked Kuwait's Ministry of Social Affairs for its hospitality and organization, and praised Qatar for its role in chairing the previous session in 2024. (end)
