Merz Warns of Prolonged Russia, Ukraine War
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced doubts on Sunday regarding the possibility of a swift diplomatic resolution between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking during an interview with a public broadcaster, the chancellor suggested that the war could persist for a considerable time, casting doubt on any near-term peace efforts.
In the conversation with the public broadcaster, Merz reaffirmed that, despite US President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to bring an end to the hostilities, recent moves by Russian President Vladimir Putin indicate a clear disinterest in meaningful talks.
"I'm not giving up hope that we can achieve this. But I'm also under no illusions," the conservative leader stated, emphasizing that historical patterns reveal wars usually conclude in one of two ways: either by the decisive defeat of one party or through exhaustion—both militarily and economically.
Merz continued by saying, “But I don't see that happening on either side at the moment, either. So I am preparing myself mentally for the fact that this war could go on for a long time. We are trying to end it as quickly as possible. But certainly not at the price of Ukraine's surrender.”
His remarks reflected a sober and realistic perspective on the current military stalemate.
When questioned about Western-backed security guarantees and the possibility of Germany dispatching ground forces to Ukraine in the event of a peace arrangement, the chancellor responded that sending troops is not a central element of ongoing diplomatic conversations.
“We're currently trying to formulate security guarantees in the event of a ceasefire. And the number one priority is supporting the Ukrainian army so that they can defend their country in the long term. That's the absolute priority,” Merz stated, underlining that bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities remains at the forefront of international support strategies.
