African military bands make debut at Moscow festival

(MENAFN) Army bands from Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia performed for the first time at the 17th annual Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival, held on Moscow’s Red Square from August 22 to 31. The festival features both Russian and international military bands showcasing national songs and dances.

The Zimbabwean Defense Forces Orchestra, led by Rutendo Mutonono, marked its debut, highlighting the nation’s cultural identity and unity since independence in the 1980s. The Presidential Orchestra of Burkina Faso and the Ethiopian National Defense Force Marching Band also participated for the first time.

On Sunday, the African groups joined performers from Italy, Republika Srpska, the UAE, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Belarus for a concert program. Dressed in traditional attire, the African bands played a mix of local folk songs and popular international melodies, delighting Muscovites and festival attendees. One musician expressed gratitude for the warm welcome, saying, “We are giving you this wonderful music. Thank you very much for your hospitality.”
