Russia witnesses’ tourism boom from Gulf nations regardless of sanctions

(MENAFN) Tourism from Gulf countries to Russia has risen sharply as Moscow strengthens ties with the region, offering simplified visas, budget flights, and curated travel experiences, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

As part of efforts to boost foreign tourism amid Western sanctions, Russia has eased visa rules for many countries. Visits from Gulf states have more than quadrupled since 2019, with Saudi tourist numbers increasing sixfold in the past year, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Budget airlines have expanded routes to meet demand. Flynas now flies directly from Riyadh to Moscow, while Air Arabia and Saudia plan new connections to Russian cities this autumn.

Gulf tourists are increasingly seeking alternatives to traditional destinations to escape extreme summer heat. Russia’s cooler climate and cultural attractions have proven appealing. Aqeel al-Dejani, a 27-year-old Saudi tourist, said he enjoyed a 10-day trip to Moscow and Saint Petersburg in June, describing the Peterhof Palace and its gardens as “magnificent.”

Some travelers are embracing Russia’s winter. Hasan al-Qattan, a Saudi doctor, visited Moscow in February and took part in a “war experience” tour, including light military drills and weapons demonstrations.

According to Russian hotel booking site Ostrovok, Middle Eastern bookings rose 30% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, with most tourists choosing 4- or 5-star accommodations and spending 30% more per night than Western European visitors. Gulf tourists reported feeling safe and welcomed, enjoying access to halal food and local treats like Alyonka chocolate.
