France rebukes US envoy over anti-Semitism allegations
(MENAFN) France has summoned the US ambassador following an op-ed that accused President Emmanuel Macron of failing to address growing anti-Semitism in the country.
The piece, published in the Wall Street Journal by Charles Kushner — father-in-law of former White House adviser Jared Kushner — claimed that anti-Semitism in France had “exploded” since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Kushner said he was alarmed by what he saw as the French government’s insufficient response and warned that Macron’s plan to recognize Palestine would “embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life in France.”
The French Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations as “unacceptable,” stressing that authorities are “fully mobilized” to combat anti-Semitic incidents. Paris also said Kushner’s comments undermined the quality of Franco-American relations and the trust between allies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has similarly criticized Macron’s decision to recognize Palestine, but the French president dismissed the objections as “erroneous.” Macron has vowed to formalize recognition at the UN General Assembly in September, calling it a “historic step toward a just and lasting peace.”
