India Successfully Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Agni-5, Strengthening Strategic Deterrence

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-5 ballistic missile from Odisha, validating operational parameters and boosting long-range deterrence amid rising regional tensions with China and Pakistan.

On August 20, 2025, India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-5 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the launch validated all operational and technical parameters under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command.

Developed indigenously by DRDO, Agni-5 has a range exceeding 5,000 kilometers, potentially reaching northern China and several parts of Europe. It is regarded as India's most advanced long-range missile, featuring precision guidance systems and strategic mobility.

A standout feature of the missile is its ability to carry Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs). India had already demonstrated this capability in a 2024 trial called“Mission Divyastra,” becoming the third nation to achieve MIRV technology.

Additional improvements include the use of lighter composite materials, a canisterized launch system, and advanced navigation through RLG-INS, micro-INS, NavIC, and GPS. These upgrades enhance both accuracy and rapid deployment capabilities.

The test took place amid heightened regional tensions, less than four months after armed clashes with Pakistan. It highlights India's determination to modernize its missile arsenal and maintain a credible second-strike capability.

The successful trial reinforces India's position as a responsible nuclear power committed to credible minimum deterrence. It also signals an evolution in India's defense posture to counter regional threats.

The demonstration is expected to attract close scrutiny from China and Pakistan, both within Agni-5's strike range. At the same time, India is advancing parallel projects such as a bunker-buster variant of Agni-5 and new hypersonic missile programs, signaling its intent to further strengthen its technological edge and strategic options.
