(MENAFN) Germany’s consideration of deploying troops to Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement with Russia has faced strong opposition from domestic parties.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), currently leading in polls, criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU/CSU alliance for contemplating sending German soldiers alongside European forces. AfD co-chair Alice Weidel called the move “irresponsible” and warned it could have “dangerous” consequences.

The socialist Left Party also opposed a NATO-led deployment, suggesting that any peacekeeping mission should instead fall under United Nations authority. Left Party co-chair Jan van Aken emphasized that Ukraine’s security guarantees should be decided within the UN framework, cautioning that relying solely on NATO troops at the Russian-Ukrainian border could escalate tensions.
