Germany Calls for Firm Security Commitments to Ukraine
(MENAFN) Germany on Monday reaffirmed its call for firm and detailed security commitments to Ukraine, emphasizing their critical role in ending the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Deputy Government Spokesman Steffen Meyer underscored the necessity of long-term stability. “Ukraine needs, of course, robust security guarantees. The question of its specific design is extremely complex. There are not only a number of political but also a number of technical questions that need to be discussed in detail,” he said.
Meyer added that Germany’s objective remains a “long-term and sustainable peace” in Ukraine, and for that reason, “these security guarantees are so important.”
While backing stronger protective measures, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stopped short of endorsing any immediate military commitment. Speaking from Tokyo, Wadephul said no decisions had been finalized with European allies regarding the potential deployment of troops under a peacekeeping mandate. “We are at the beginning of a difficult process,” he noted.
The developments come as diplomatic momentum intensifies following a rare high-level summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, held Friday in Anchorage, Alaska. It was the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders in over four years.
Later Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to arrive in Washington for urgent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Trump, and other European heads of state.
According to government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, the meeting aims to assess the outcome of the Trump-Putin summit. “The trip serves as an information exchange with US President Donald Trump after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska,” Kornelius said in an official statement.
