Trump Threatens Severe Sanctions on Russia If Ceasefire Talks Fail

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Wednesday, declaring that Russia would face "very severe consequences" if President Vladimir Putin fails to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict during their upcoming meeting.

Following discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, Trump revealed that he is hopeful for a productive meeting with Putin. If the talks go well, Trump expressed a desire to arrange a trilateral summit with Putin and Zelensky in the near future.

Earlier on Wednesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that Washington might escalate sanctions against Moscow if the Trump-Putin talks do not yield significant progress.

The much-anticipated face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin is set for Friday in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. Trump referred to the session as a "feel-out meeting," underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the outcome.
