Indian ambassador says Putin, Modi are “very genuine people”
(MENAFN) India’s ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, has described the relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as having a “positive chemistry,” according to reports.
The two leaders most recently spoke by phone on Friday, during which Putin updated Modi on the latest developments in the Ukraine peace process. Putin is scheduled to travel to Alaska later this week for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the conflict.
“There is definitely a positive chemistry between [Putin and Modi],” Kumar said. “They have met many times, they keep regularly speaking on the phone with each other.”
When asked about the friendly body language observed between Putin and Modi during their meetings, Kumar described both leaders as “very genuine people.”
The ambassador also commented on recent developments in India-U.S. relations. Earlier this month, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, citing New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil, which he claimed indirectly supports Moscow’s military efforts in Ukraine. Trump stated on Monday that the tariffs had delivered a “big blow” to Russia.
“Our reaction has been very measured,” Kumar said regarding the U.S. measures. “India decides on its trade ties with different countries in its own national interest just as every other country would do.”
He added that India’s purchase of Russian oil has contributed to stability in the global oil market. “There are many other countries which are trading with Russia, including the countries which have imposed sanctions. What we are doing is looking out for the interests of the people of India. We are going to get the best deal possible to serve our people,” Kumar said.
