Witkoff visits Moscow before truce deadline with Ukraine

(MENAFN) Steve Witkoff, the special envoy appointed by US President Donald Trump, arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, just 48 hours before the expiration of a ceasefire deadline given to Russia regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

According to reports, Witkoff landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport early in the day, where he was welcomed by Kirill Dmitriev, a close adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

Following his arrival, Witkoff and Dmitriev were seen walking together through Zaryadye Park, which lies adjacent to Red Square in the Russian capital.

This marks Witkoff’s fifth visit to Russia since the beginning of the year. His most recent trips occurred in April, during which he held discussions with President Putin.

On Tuesday, the Kremlin did not dismiss the possibility of a meeting between Witkoff and Putin during this latest visit, describing the ongoing dialogue with the US envoy as “important, meaningful, and very useful.”

Witkoff’s presence in Moscow comes just days before the August 8 deadline imposed by President Trump, which calls on Russia to finalize a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine or potentially face new US sanctions.
