Zelenskyy, Trump Hold Talks on Russia-Ukraine War End
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on Tuesday that he held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump focused on ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Describing the exchange as "productive," Zelenskyy highlighted the central aim of achieving peace. He expressed gratitude on X, stating, "A productive conversation with President Trump, with the key focus of course being ending the war. We are grateful to @POTUS for all efforts toward a just and lasting peace."
During the call, Zelenskyy said the two leaders aligned their perspectives, shared assessments of the current situation, and acknowledged a sharp escalation in Russian attacks.
"President Trump is fully informed about Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities and communities," Zelenskyy confirmed.
Sanctions targeting Moscow also featured prominently in the discussion. Zelenskyy pointed out Trump's warning to intensify sanctions against Russia’s oil sector, which he believes "can change a lot."
"We discussed joint European decisions that can help our defense. We already have commitments from the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark – over one billion dollars for American weapons that Ukraine will receive. Thank you! This cooperation with NATO countries will continue," he further noted.
Bilateral defense collaboration was another key topic. Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine has already drafted an agreement on drones and is prepared to review and finalize it soon, emphasizing it could become "one of the strongest agreements."
Meanwhile, Trump announced plans to sharply raise tariffs on India within 24 hours in response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. He argued that a decline in oil prices "by another $10 per barrel" could "force" Russia to cease its military operations in Ukraine, a conflict ongoing since February 2022.
