West Virginia Airman Honored For Heroism During Afghanistan Evacuation

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) A West Virginia airman received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic role in the 2021 Afghanistan evacuation, protecting crew and civilians during final flights.

In the lead-up to the fourth anniversary of the Kabul evacuation, U.S. Air Force serviceman William K. McGraw, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, has been awarded the prestigious Air Medal for his heroic role during the 2021 operation.

McGraw received the honor on Sunday, August 3, during a formal ceremony at McLaughlin Air Base. The Air Medal is awarded exclusively to individuals who demonstrate exceptional bravery or perform heroic actions during flight missions.

He was part of Operation Allies Refuge, the largest evacuation effort in U.S. Air Force history, which began following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021. During this operation, over 124,000 people-including foreign nationals and Afghan allies-were airlifted from Kabul International Airport.

As a member of the elite Phoenix Raven unit, McGraw was tasked with securing a C-17 aircraft during the final U.S. military flight out of Kabul. His primary responsibility was to safeguard the lives of the crew and hundreds of passengers on board, ensuring the aircraft remained secure and operational under intense pressure.

McGraw emphasized that the mission's success was the result of rigorous training and professional discipline. He humbly accepted the medal on behalf of those who still await formal recognition for their service. He also called on the public to honor the memory of those who lost their lives during the evacuation.

This recognition not only highlights McGraw's individual courage but also underscores the immense challenges faced by U.S. forces during the chaotic and emotionally charged final days of the war in Afghanistan.

As the anniversary approaches, veterans and advocates continue to urge greater support and resettlement efforts for Afghan allies left behind, many of whom remain in limbo despite their critical roles in supporting coalition missions.
