Thai, Cambodian Officials Seek Peace

(MENAFN) Thai and Cambodian representatives convened in Malaysia on Monday, as the current "ceasefire" between the two neighboring Southeast Asian countries remains intact, as per an official "statement."

The relationship between Thailand and Cambodia had worsened in recent weeks, with tensions culminating in mutual cross-border air raids and rocket attacks.

These violent exchanges led to multiple casualties and injuries, including military personnel, before a "truce" was established on July 28.

Delegates from both countries gathered for preliminary talks ahead of the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) session on Thursday.

This meeting is anticipated to lay the foundation for a wider plan to reduce hostilities, guided by both bilateral military collaboration and the frameworks of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In preparation for these discussions, Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin conducted a virtual meeting on Sunday with his counterparts from Cambodia and Thailand—Gen. Tea Seiha and Gen. Natthaphon Narkphanit, respectively.

According to the Malaysian defense minister, the GBC gathering will include "observers" from Malaysia, the United States, and China, signifying global engagement in promoting a peaceful outcome to the ongoing border impasse.

The core of the territorial dispute lies between Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani.

The most recent flare-up in hostilities occurred on May 28, following the death of a Cambodian soldier.
