Trump claims he heard India stopped purchasing Russian oil
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has heard India has stopped purchasing oil from Russia, calling the development a “good step.”
Speaking to reporters while leaving the White House for his weekend at Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey, Trump stated, “That’s what I heard. I don’t know if it’s accurate, but it’s a good step. We’ll see what happens.”
Trump has previously criticized India for unfair trade practices and close energy and military ties with Russia. On Wednesday, he announced on Truth Social that India would face a 25% tariff plus an additional penalty starting August 1, without providing further details about the penalty.
He lamented that although India is a US friend, trade between the two has been limited due to India’s high tariffs, which he described as among the highest worldwide.
According to the US Trade Representative’s office, bilateral trade between the US and India reached $129 billion in 2024, with the US running a trade deficit of $45.7 billion.
