Zelensky issues threat of ‘long-range strikes’ inside Russia

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has announced plans for more long-range attacks on Russian territory, following renewed commitments of military aid from the United States.

The statement came after Zelensky held talks with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Syrsky, and Chief of the General Staff Andrey Gnatov. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky said Ukrainian forces will continue targeting Russian troops and are “preparing new long-range strikes” aimed at Russian soil.

He also mentioned upcoming talks with U.S. presidential envoy Keith Kellogg to discuss further arms shipments and the expansion of joint weapons production with international partners.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has launched several attacks far from the front lines, including strikes on Russian air bases that host strategic bombers. Russian authorities have also accused Ukraine of hitting civilian infrastructure and causing a deadly train derailment on March 31 that killed seven people.

Germany, meanwhile, is preparing to deliver long-range missiles to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package funded by Berlin. Major General Christian Freuding confirmed that the weapons will arrive in the coming weeks.

In addition, the European Union has ramped up funding—totaling hundreds of billions of euros—to bolster its arms industry and support Ukrainian weapons manufacturing.

Following a suspension of aid, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed this week that the Pentagon will resume military support for Kiev and is considering a fresh package.

Moscow has warned that the use of advanced Western-supplied missiles by Ukrainian forces amounts to direct NATO involvement in the war. Russian officials continue to argue that such complex systems cannot be operated without Western assistance.
