Russia reveals possible meeting between Trump, Putin
(MENAFN) Russia has expressed willingness to discuss a potential meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump if Trump attends commemorations in Beijing this September, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
The Chinese capital will hold a military parade on September 3 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two. Putin has already confirmed his attendance.
There has been growing speculation about a possible summit involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the celebrations. Reports suggest that China has invited Trump and may be preparing to host a trilateral meeting, though Chinese authorities have not officially confirmed these plans.
“If it so happens that [Trump] is there, then, of course, we cannot rule out that the question of the expediency of holding a meeting will be raised,” Peskov said on Monday. He also noted that the Kremlin has yet to receive confirmation of Trump’s attendance.
Earlier, Peskov mentioned that a Putin-Trump meeting is likely to occur eventually but requires significant preparation, and the timing is not right yet.
This discussion follows a June phone call between Trump and Xi, in which Trump acknowledged an invitation to visit China without specifying a date.
Putin and Trump have maintained phone communications in recent months, mainly focusing on resolving the Ukraine conflict. While Trump recently criticized Putin for resisting a settlement, the Kremlin said it received the remarks calmly and remains committed to dialogue with Washington.
