UK Foreign Secretary Condemns Israel’s Aid Strategy

(MENAFN) Britain’s foreign secretary has strongly reiterated the UK’s firm disapproval of Israel’s "inhumane" and "dangerous" method of delivering humanitarian assistance, sharply criticizing the strategy as deeply harmful.

Speaking during a session in the House of Commons on Monday, David Lammy "utterly condemned" the killing of Palestinians who were trying to access food.

Lammy noted that it has been nearly four months since Israel resumed its lethal military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Since the renewed offensive began in October 2023, close to 60,000 people have reportedly lost their lives due to Israeli bombardments, according to a news agency and other sources.

He emphasized that Israeli military operations have displaced Palestinians from approximately 86% of Gaza’s territory, forcing close to 2 million people into a confined space barely exceeding 20 square miles.

Despite Israeli authorities’ justification of such actions for security purposes, Lammy argued that the continued forced movement of civilians is counterproductive. “In fact, it’s quite the reverse,” he said, implying it increases rather than decreases harm to civilians.

Addressing the current system of aid delivery, Lammy stated, "The new Israeli aid system is inhumane, it’s dangerous, and it deprives Gazans of human dignity."

He described how vulnerable civilians, including children, are compelled to risk their lives scrambling for basic necessities in highly unsafe conditions.

He further described the situation as a "grotesque spectacle, wreaking a terrible human cost," highlighting that nearly 1,000 civilians have died since May in their attempts to secure humanitarian assistance—100 of whom were killed just over the past weekend.

Lammy also condemned specific military actions targeting civilians, saying, "Israeli jets have hit women and children waiting for a health clinic to open... I utterly condemn the killing of civilians seeking to meet their most basic needs."

His comments reflect growing international concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and intensify pressure on Israel to revise its policies.
