Uri Locals Seek Fencing, Rescue Teams Along LJHP Canal

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Residents of border town Uri in north Kashmir's Baramulla district have urged the authorities to immediately install fencing along the Lower Jhelum Hydel Project (LJHP) canal in Gantamulla to prevent tragedies.

Locals have expressed serious concern over recurring drowning incidents in the canal and are calling for urgent safety measures.

The canal, which attracts many visitors – especially during summer months has witnessed several drowning cases in recent years, most involving youth and children.

Locals said the lack of basic safety infrastructure, including fencing, signage, and rescue equipment, has turned the scenic spot into a death trap.

“There's not even a single warning board to alert people about the danger. We keep hearing about people drowning here every year, but authorities do nothing,” said Irfan Ahmad, a local of Boniyar tehsil.“We are not asking for much, just basic safety measures like fencing and rescue teams to prevent loss of life.”

They are also demanding that the LJHP authorities station boats along the canal for emergency rescue operations and deploy personnel to monitor visitor activity, particularly as the area has become a popular picnic destination.

“People come here with families, children play near the canal, and one slip is all it takes. If boats and rescue men are deployed, lives can be saved,” said Tanveer Ahmad, a local of main town Uri.

In addition to fencing, residents have urged the administration to install visible signboards at regular intervals along the canal, warning visitors about the risks of swimming or venturing near the fast-flowing water.

“This is not just a demand, it's a plea. We don't want to mourn another young life just because someone didn't see the danger,” said Mohsin Bhat, another local.

Despite repeated appeals, residents claim there has been little to no response from the concerned departments.

“We now urge the LG-led government and district administration to intervene and direct the LJHP authorities to take immediate action before more lives are lost,” they added.

The demand for safety measures has grown louder following a recent incident in which three individuals drowned in the canal.
