Aggression on US federal immigration officers increase dramatically
(MENAFN) US federal immigration officers have experienced a sharp rise in attacks since President Donald Trump took office, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported Tuesday, attributing the surge to inflammatory rhetoric from what it called “gutter politicians.”
Between January 21 and July 14, assaults on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents increased by 830% compared to the same period last year.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “ICE law enforcement are succeeding in removing terrorists, murderers, pedophiles, and the most depraved among us from America’s communities, even as crazed rhetoric from gutter politicians is inspiring a massive increase in assaults against them.”
The agency highlighted several incidents, including a violent confrontation during a congressional visit to a New Jersey detention center involving Representative LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), who was later indicted on federal assault charges and pleaded not guilty.
Recently, Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA) reportedly showed a mob an ICE employee’s business card, which led to the official being attacked with a rock and hospitalized with multiple stitches.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem called on politicians nationwide to condemn the violence, specifically criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom. Anti-ICE protests in California escalated into riots in early June, prompting Trump to deploy the National Guard. Newsom called the deployment a “federal takeover,” which fueled further protests in cities like New York, Chicago, and Dallas.
