Installation Of AI-Enabled CCTV Cameras By Railways Create Huge Business Opportunity
This major move comes after successful trials in the Northern Railway zone and was recently approved in a high-level review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu.
Each passenger coach will be fitted with four dome cameras certified by the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC).
These cameras will be installed at entry points and key movement areas like corridors, without invading private zones such as seating or sleeping compartments.
In locomotives, six cameras will be added - two at the front and rear, one on each side, and one in each driver's cabin - along with desk-mounted microphones to capture audio.
The surveillance system is designed to work efficiently in low light and at speeds above 100 km/h, ensuring 24/7monitoring of public areas.
This upgrade is part of a broader safety strategy to prevent theft, harassment, and other crimes, while also supporting quick identification and response in case of any untoward incidents.
Artificial intelligence (AI) will also play a key role in enhancing safety. As part of the IndiaAI mission, the Railways is exploring real-time AI-based analytics that can trigger alerts for unusual behavior, unauthorized access, or potential threats.
To address privacy concerns, officials have clarified that the cameras will not be placed in private spaces. All installations follow data protection rules and have been approved under national cybersecurity guidelines.
This initiative marks a significant step toward safer train journeys, blending technology and governance to enhance trust in the public transport system.
