Wet Spell In Kashmir To Continue Till July 17: Met

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- After a brief rise in mercury, temperatures have dipped once again across the Kashmir Valley as widespread rainfall returned on Monday, prompting weather and district authorities to issue advisories and alerts.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued wet weather in Jammu and Kashmir until July 17, with the possibility of intense rainfall in some areas. The shift in weather has brought much-needed relief from the recent heat, but also raised concerns about flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable regions.

The MeT has issued an Orange alert for the Jammu division, predicting isolated heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until July 16. A Yellow alert will remain in place in the division from July 18 to 20.

For the Kashmir division, a Yellow alert has been issued for the entire week, with cloudy skies and intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers likely across many areas.

“There is a possibility of intense showers and heavy rain at a few locations until July 17,” said Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MeT department. He added that from July 18 to 21, fresh spells of rain and thundershowers are expected at scattered places across the Union Territory.

Amid forecasts of adverse weather, the Srinagar district administration issued a public advisory on Sunday evening, urging caution between July 14 and 17.

“In view of heavy rain and thunderstorms with strong winds, tourists, Shikara riders, sand extractors, and boat operators are advised to avoid travel on Dal Lake, the Jhelum River, and other water bodies,” the advisory read.

The administration also cautioned residents, particularly those living close to rivers, streams, and tributaries, to stay away from water bodies during the period of forecasted heavy rain.

Citizens have been urged to remain alert, follow official safety instructions, and report emergencies to the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC), ERSS, or Police Control Room.

The MeT has warned of flash floods at vulnerable locations and possible incidents of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, especially in hilly and mountainous regions.
