New NATO commander claims ‘Ukraine can win’

(MENAFN) European Command. Speaking at a US Senate hearing on Tuesday, Grynkewich, who assumed his role earlier this month, expressed confidence in Ukraine’s potential despite mounting casualties and declining financial support.

“I believe Ukraine can win,” he said, highlighting the remarkable resilience shown by Ukrainian forces, though he did not clarify what exactly “victory” would entail or provide details on Ukraine’s battlefield prospects.

NATO has consistently pushed for a military defeat of Russia and continues to arm and support Ukraine with intelligence, even as Kiev struggles to hold territory. Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive yielded no significant results, and its recent attempt to breach Russia’s Kursk Region was repelled. Meanwhile, Russian forces have advanced in various sectors, including Donetsk and Kharkov.

Doubts about Ukraine’s ability to achieve victory are growing among Western analysts and officials. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently remarked that defeating nuclear-armed Russia militarily was impossible from the outset.

US President Donald Trump has also questioned Ukraine’s chances, advocating instead for a negotiated peace deal. He has argued that Crimea will remain Russian and has warned that Ukraine may not survive the war, even with ongoing US support.

Moscow maintains that a Russian victory is inevitable and criticizes Western military aid for merely prolonging the conflict. President Vladimir Putin has insisted that peace can only come once Russia’s security concerns are addressed and has accused Ukraine’s Western allies of using the war to pursue their own geopolitical interests.
