French President Calls For Joint French-British Recognition Of Palestinian State
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) French President Emmanuel Macron Thursday called for a joint recognition of the State of Palestine by France and the United Kingdom, describing the move as the only path that leads to a horizon for peace between the Israeli entity and the Palestinians.
Speaking at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the conclusion of his visit to the UK, Macron stated that the future of the two-state solution is what allows Israel to live in peace and security with its neighbors, urging Paris and London to unify their positions in recognizing the State of Palestine and to launch a political momentum toward a comprehensive settlement.
For his part, Starmer reaffirmed the UK's commitment to achieving a just political solution to the Palestinian issue, emphasizing the importance of the international community's role in supporting the Palestinian people and promoting peace and stability in the region.
The bilateral summit between the two leaders also addressed a number of strategic issues, including bilateral relations, European security, military cooperation, and regional and international matters.
In this context, the UK and France announced a new agreement that includes the return of some migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats to France, in exchange for the UK accepting a similar number of asylum seekers deemed to have legitimate claims.
In its initial phase, the agreement will involve the return of approximately 50 migrants per week. The British government described the deal as a significant step, as it sets a precedent allowing the return of individuals who enter the UK illegally back to France, as part of efforts to curb irregular migration flows.
