Trump states daughter-in-law is great candidate for North Carolina Senate seat

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump expressed support Tuesday for his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as a strong candidate to fill the North Carolina Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Thom Tillis.

When asked aboard Air Force One about potential contenders for the seat, Trump replied, "Somebody that would really be great is Lara. She grew up there."

Though he acknowledged that Lara and his son Eric currently live in Florida, Trump noted, “She’s a great person, Lara Trump. I mean, that would always be my first choice, but she doesn’t live there now.” He added that Lara frequently visits North Carolina and is familiar with the state, where he himself won three times.

Trump mentioned uncertainty about other candidates, suggesting that a current congressman might run and perform well.

Regarding Tillis, Trump commented, “I didn’t get along with Tillis and he resigned. It's good.” Tillis, a Republican, recently announced he will not seek reelection in 2026 after publicly opposing Trump’s tax and spending proposals, particularly the planned cuts to healthcare programs.
