Beijing Blasts U.S. 'Spy' Allegations

(MENAFN) Beijing responded sharply on Wednesday to the United States’ “unfounded hype” regarding “so-called Chinese spies,” reaffirming its commitment to protect the “rights and interests” of its people.

This reaction came after the US announced charges against two Chinese nationals for allegedly attempting to recruit US military personnel for China.

"I am not aware of the specifics, but we have always opposed unfounded hype about so-called 'Chinese spies,'" stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press briefing in Beijing.

"We will take the necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens," she added.

The US Justice Department revealed on Tuesday that Yuance Chen, 38, and Liren "Ryan" Lai, 39, were arrested last Friday for allegedly conducting covert intelligence operations in the US on behalf of China’s State Security Ministry.

According to the Justice Department, the two individuals are accused of paying for classified US military data, collecting naval intelligence, and attempting to recruit US service members for Chinese interests.
