One Big Beautiful Bill showcases divisions in Washington

(MENAFN) A lengthy vote was underway on Monday in the U.S. over President Donald Trump’s sweeping legislation known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, which has laid bare sharp partisan disagreements in the capital.

Trump promoted the bill as delivering the largest tax cuts ever for working- and middle-class Americans, claiming it will “unleash our economy.”

The legislation includes numerous tax reductions aimed at businesses and families, with Trump describing it as a measure that will “turbo-charge our economy and bring back the American dream.”

Despite these claims, Democrats strongly oppose the bill, arguing it represents Trump’s agenda and sharply contrasts with their vision for the country.

Democrats criticize the tax cuts, saying they primarily benefit the wealthy, although Republicans argue that the bill will aid the middle class.

Further fueling Democratic opposition are concerns over cuts to critical social programs such as Medicaid—which provides health care for low-income individuals—and food assistance.

Both Democrats and some Republicans worry the bill could add trillions of dollars to the already mounting national debt.

Christopher Galdieri, a political science professor at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, described the bill as “essentially a mega-bill combining most of Trump's legislative ambitions into one package — tax cuts, spending cuts, massively increasing the budget for ICE, and more.”
