Trump Criticizes Musk Over EV Subsidies
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump once again targeted his former ally Elon Musk on Tuesday, asserting that the billionaire would “head back home to South Africa” if financial incentives for electric vehicles were withdrawn.
Trump stated on social media that “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far,” and argued that without such governmental support, Musk would likely “have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
The comment referred to Musk’s ventures, including the prominent electric vehicle producer Tesla.
Trump’s comments came in response to Musk’s ongoing disapproval of what the president has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The entrepreneur criticized the legislation’s proposed reductions in clean energy and EV credits, describing them as “incredibly destructive” and branding the move as “political suicide for the Republican Party.”
Trump emphasized that Musk had long been aware of his opposition to mandates for electric vehicles, even before offering a “strong” endorsement for his presidential campaign.
He reiterated his position, saying, “Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one,” and called the EV requirement “ridiculous.”
While there is no existing US law that obliges citizens to buy electric vehicles, incentive programs currently exist to encourage consumers to opt for environmentally friendly options.
On the same day, Musk continued to voice discontent via X, criticizing lawmakers who had campaigned on reducing government spending but supported the controversial bill.
He said they should “hang their heads in shame” and forecasted that they would be defeated in next year’s party primaries.
In a final jab, Trump broadened his criticism to Musk’s other ventures, notably SpaceX, stating, “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE.”
He added, “Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” referencing both SpaceX’s lucrative government deals and Musk’s connection to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
