Musk Slams Trump’s Budget Bill as “Utterly Insane”
(MENAFN) Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk launched a fresh and fiery critique of President Donald Trump’s budget proposal on Saturday, denouncing it as “utterly insane” and claiming it would plunge the United States into “debt slavery” while eliminating millions of American jobs. The clash marks a dramatic escalation in tensions between the two high-profile figures, once political allies, whose relationship has soured sharply in recent weeks over Trump’s controversial “big, beautiful” tax and spending package.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief unleashed his criticism just hours ahead of a razor-thin procedural vote in the Senate, where lawmakers advanced the bill 51-49. Vice President J.D. Vance was prepared to cast a tie-breaking vote if needed.
Taking to X, Musk issued a stark warning: “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!”
In a flurry of posts, Musk slammed the legislation for bolstering what he called “industries of the past”—a likely swipe at continued support for fossil fuels—while marginalizing forward-leaning sectors such as clean energy and advanced technology.
He further argued that the bill’s proposed $5 trillion debt ceiling increase would accelerate America’s financial decline, describing it as the “fast lane to debt slavery.” Musk pointed to internal polling indicating that many Republican voters disapprove of the bill due to its potential impact on the national deficit.
Following his exit from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk didn’t hold back, labeling the bill a “disgusting abomination” and blasting its implications for the U.S. economy.
Former President Trump fired back, suggesting Musk’s opposition was rooted in bitterness over the rollback of electric vehicle tax credits—once a key benefit for Tesla. Musk then escalated the feud by alluding to Trump’s rumored connections with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In response, Trump reportedly considered terminating federal contracts with SpaceX.
Though the situation intensified, it eventually cooled when Musk offered an apology, and Trump indicated he might be open to reconciliation.
