Türkiye, Syria Restart Direct International Road Transport
(MENAFN) Türkiye and Syria have signed a new memorandum of understanding to restart international road transport, signaling a major step toward restoring direct land trade between the two nations, Türkiye's transport and infrastructure minister announced on Saturday.
During the Global Transport Connectivity Forum held in Istanbul, Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu told Anadolu that the deal revives a previously dormant 2004 agreement on international road transport between the two countries.
Under the new terms, trucks from both sides will now be permitted to drive across the border without the need to offload cargo onto separate vehicles, a move expected to streamline cross-border trade.
“Cargo transfer at border crossings will end, allowing goods to be transported directly between Türkiye and Syria without the need for transshipment,” he said.
Uraloglu also revealed that both countries reached an agreement to begin transit transportation operations, enabling uninterrupted overland trade routes from Türkiye to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and other Gulf states.
In addition, Turkish and Syrian officials plan to collaborate on a range of passenger and freight transport initiatives, including joint training programs, he noted.
According to Uraloglu, restoring land transport links will enhance the regional trade flow between Europe and Asia while also helping integrate the strategic Middle Corridor with Gulf economies.
The development comes after the Assad regime, which had ruled Syria for decades, was ousted last December. A transitional government assumed power in January, opening the door to renewed diplomatic and economic ties with regional and global partners.
