Deadly Explosion Kills Israeli Army Personnel in Gaza
(MENAFN) An Israeli officer and six soldiers were killed when their armored vehicle detonated an explosive device in southern Gaza, the Israeli military announced Wednesday.
The explosion occurred east of Khan Younis, representing one of the most severe losses for Israeli troops since the ground offensive began in Gaza in October 2023. This deadly event happened just after a delicate ceasefire between Israel and Iran took effect on Tuesday, following 12 days of intense conflict.
The military confirmed the seven "fell during combat." State-owned media reported the bomb targeted an armored personnel carrier (APC), which erupted into flames following the explosion. Israeli forces at the scene used a D9 bulldozer to cover the burning APC with sand before towing it back to Israeli-controlled territory.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, a soldier from the 605th Battalion of the 188th Brigade was seriously injured during fighting in southern Gaza, the military added.
The al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, claimed responsibility for the attack. On its Telegram channel, the group detailed that its fighters ambushed Israeli troops and struck a rescue unit in a follow-up assault. It stated that one fighter crawled beneath the APC, placed an explosive device, and then triggered it.
These latest deaths raise the Israeli military’s Gaza casualty count to 878 since October 2023, according to official data. Gaza health authorities report at least 56,077 Palestinians have died in Israeli strikes during the same timeframe.
