UN Official Addresses Iran, Israel Ceasefire
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, a senior UN official emphasized that the ceasefire between Israel and Iran presents a significant opportunity to halt further conflict and address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program through diplomatic and peaceful measures.
"At the heart of this conflict is the nature of Iran's nuclear program," stated Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN’s Political Affairs chief, during a Security Council meeting.
She noted that after the deadly confrontations over the past 12 days, the ceasefire agreement provides a chance to prevent a disastrous escalation and work toward a peaceful resolution concerning the Iran nuclear issue.
DiCarlo pointed out the ongoing difficulties in reviving the 2015 nuclear agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
She stated, "The JCPOA has faced many challenges since its inception, including the withdrawal of the US from the agreement in 2018 and Iran's withdrawal from some of its commitments as outlined in the plan."
Furthermore, she mentioned that "Iran and the US engaged in five rounds of bilateral talks, facilitated by Oman. Regrettably, neither of these initiatives produced a way forward to ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program."
The situation has further worsened following "the military escalation between Israel and Iran since 13 June and United States airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities on 21 June," DiCarlo concluded.
