Ukraine Urges UN Action As Over 4.6M Ukrainian Citizens Remain Idps

"I called on UN Human Rights Council member states to support Ukrainians who have lost their homes! I spoke during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons as part of the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council. I thanked the international community for its attention to the rights of IDPs and the protection of displaced persons on the global stage," Lubinets stated.

According to him, more than 4.6 million people are currently internally displaced in Ukraine. Half of them are children, pensioners, and persons with disabilities.

"I emphasized that Ukrainian IDPs are not just a vulnerable group - they are citizens who want to contribute to rebuilding the country. However, despite the government's efforts, meeting their needs remains a major challenge due to limited resources and declining international support," he added.

Lubinets urged UN member states to support the creation of a Social Housing Fund and the launch of long-term compensation mechanisms. He noted that such measures are critically important for sustainable protection of IDPs, including through the use of frozen Russian assets.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, more than 6.9 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave the country due to Russia's full-scale invasion.
