Russia condemns US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites

(MENAFN) Russia has strongly denounced the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, labeling the attacks as “irresponsible, provocative and dangerous” and warning they could escalate the Middle East into a large-scale conflict with potentially devastating nuclear fallout.

At an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington of breaching the UN Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“The United States has opened a Pandora’s box, and no one knows what consequences may follow,” Nebenzia declared, emphasizing that by targeting nuclear facilities overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.S. had “once again demonstrated total disregard for the position of the international community.”

Nebenzia drew a sharp parallel with the events leading up to the 2003 Iraq War, when then-Secretary of State Colin Powell presented false evidence to justify invading a sovereign nation, plunging its population into decades of chaos without ever finding the alleged weapons of mass destruction.

“Many today feel a strong sense of déjà vu,” he said. “The current situation is essentially no different: we are once again being urged to believe in fairy tales in order to once again bring suffering to millions of people living in the Middle East.”

Russia maintained that Iran has not been proven to be developing nuclear weapons, echoing earlier U.S. intelligence assessments that were dismissed by US President Donald Trump as “wrong.” Nebenzia accused the United States of manufacturing a narrative to rationalize the use of force, thereby undermining the long-standing diplomatic efforts centered on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.
