Australia Refuses to Support U.S. Strikes on Iran
(MENAFN) On Sunday, Australia chose not to publicly support the US military actions targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, instead urging efforts to reduce tensions, according to reports from local news outlets.
A government representative, speaking to media, noted that Canberra acknowledges US President Donald Trump’s call stressing that "now is the time for peace."
The spokesperson, who remained unnamed, highlighted the precarious security climate in the region, stating, "The security situation in the region is highly volatile. We continue to call for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy."
Nonetheless, the official stopped short of endorsing the American airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, as reported by the broadcaster.
“We have been clear that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program has been a threat to international peace and security,” the spokesperson added.
Tensions escalated after President Trump announced on Sunday that US forces conducted "very successful" air raids on three Iranian nuclear sites, fueling fears of a potential wider conflict.
In response, Iran demanded an urgent session of the UN Security Council to denounce the US military action and seek accountability for violations of international law.
The recent clashes began on June 13, when Israel launched air attacks on multiple locations within Iran, including military and nuclear targets, triggering Iranian retaliatory missile strikes.
Israeli officials report that at least 25 people have lost their lives and hundreds have sustained injuries due to Iranian missile attacks since the escalation.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Health Ministry reports that the Israeli offensive has caused 430 deaths and left over 3,500 wounded within Iran.
